Sustainable Wood Recycling

The Wood Shack is a social enterprise that collects waste wood to divert it from landfill. Last year, we rescued 533 tonnes of wood from the waste stream and reused or recycled 100% of it!

Our environmentally friendly, wood collection service is available 5 days a week across Birmingham, Coventry, Worcestershire and the surrounding areas. We collect all types of wood including pallets, cable drums, and timber off-cuts from all kinds of customers including businesses, construction and manufacturing sites.

If you usually hire a skip to get rid of your waste wood or are considering getting one, get in touch for a more sustainable alternative.

What happens to the wood we collect?

Wooden Chairs

Reused

60% of the wood we collect is pushed up the waste hierarchy into reuse; used by the community for DIY/ building projects or as firewood, or made into a whole range of beautiful products from bird boxes to thrones for the 2022 Commonwealth Games!

Woodchip

Recycled

40% is sent for recycling into woodchip, used in the manufacture of particleboard, animal bedding, or as carbon-neutral fuel in power stations.

Timber Yard & Social Impact

The wood we collect is processed and sold to the public at our timber yard in Birmingham. This creates work opportunities for people facing real and significant challenges in getting a job. These could include trauma, insufficient work experience, health & wellbeing needs, education barriers and communication challenges.

Last year, we supported 16 people including five survivors of modern slavery. Our ultimate goal is to help people into sustainable employment and for the last three years, 100% of those who completed their project progressed into a positive outcome. and we generated an estimated £200,000 in social value.

As part of JERICHO, we were named one of the top 100 UK social enterprises for 2023.
